Understanding image sizes and how they benefit you on each social media platform is key. How should your image fit into your newsfeed? How about your timeline?

Each social media platform has its own image dimensions and it helps to have some clarity on each when you’re trying to create your brand.

This means that businesses who use Facebook have a lot of potential customers they can reach. It’s important that when you present yourself on Facebook, your images are sleek and well-produced. One of those ways is to make sure that they’re sized correctly.

Facebook Personal: Profile Pictures

Your profile picture is a really important aspect of your Facebook branding. The profile picture is the square image that lays over top of your cover photo. It’s going to be the first image people see on your facebook profile, and its the image that appears when you make comments. It’s also the image that will appear when people look you up on Facebook’s Open Graph. In other words, it’s a pretty important image.

A Business Profile picture is essentially the same as a personal profile picture. However, to make it stand out from a personal account, Facebook recently made some changes. Now, instead of a business profile picture appearing as layered overtop of the cover photo, it is to the left of the cover photo.

Your cover photo only appears on your timeline, but it is much larger than your profile picture. There’s a lot of freedom and creativity available when using a cover page. You can really convey a lot of personality and branding through your cover photo.

It’s very important to remember with a cover photo to use an image that is large enough, and with a high enough resolution, that it will not appear blurry or distorted.

Facebook: Shared Images

Shared images are some of the most common images on Facebook. Shared images appear on your timeline and hopefully will also appear on your follower’s News Feeds. The greater the engagement your images receive, the greater reach that your images will have. Sharing high-quality interesting images will increase the likelihood of people sharing your images. It will also increase the likelihood of them engaging with your original post.

  • The maximum width is 450 pixels in feed.
  • The maximum width is 504 pixels on your page
  • Recommended upload size is 1200 x 630 pixels for best results.
  • If you share multiple photos, Facebook creates a collage based on image sizes and orientation.

Facebook: Shared Links

Sharing links is another way to post images on Facebook. When you share a link you have the option of also sharing an image to go along with the link. Unlike with a single shared image, a linked image gives you a few more options. For example, you can choose to share a link with a small square image, or a larger rectangular image. If you choose the small square, the image will appear on the left of the text. If you choose the larger rectangular picture, the text will appear underneath your image.

  • If you choose a small square photo the minimum pixel size is 154 x 154 in feed.
  • On your page, the minimum square photo is 116 x 116.

It’s also important to make sure that the image you choose is relevant to the event that you’re promoting. Lastly, make sure that your image size is the correct dimensions so it looks the best.

  • The ratio is 16:9.
  • Facebook will scale down the photo to 470 x 174 pixels.
  • Shows in the feed as 470 x 174 pixels.

Twitter may not have as many active users as Facebook, but 330 million monthly users, and 500 million tweets a day, is no small amount.

While at its heart Twitter is about text communications, it can’t be ignored that people are much more likely to interact and retweet images and videos. According to one small study done by Buffer, tweets with images are 150% more likely to be retweeted.

In light of this, make sure that your images are top-notch on your Twitter account, and that they are sized appropriately.

When you’re deciding on a Twitter header photo you’ll want to think about how you want to be perceived by anyone who visits your page. The image is much larger than the Twitter profile picture, so there’s a lot of room for creativity.

  • While not recommended, it’s possible to use images that are 1024 x 280 pixels.

As mentioned before, In-stream photos are a really great way to create engagement with your followers and potential followers. People are naturally drawn to images and this is true on Twitter as well.  A bonus is Twitter updated their platform so images no longer count against your Tweet character limit.

When you upload a picture it will appear in your follower’s stream. If they retweet it then it will appear in their follower’s streams and so on.

Sometimes Twitter will collapse your pictures so they fit in a user’s stream. Keep this in mind when you’re posting pictures and make sure Twitter is displaying the part of your picture that you want to be shown. You can do this by making the width of your photo fit the minimum requirements.

  • The maximum size for animated GIFs is 5MB on mobile phones and 15 MB on the web.
  • Valid format types for in-stream photos are GIF, JPG, and PNG files.
  • BMP and TIFF files are unsupported.
  • Twitter only supports animated GIFs that are looped – otherwise, it is displayed like a static image.

Instagram, which passed Twitter’s active user amount in 2015, not has an astounding 800 million active monthly users. With roughly 95 million photos uploaded every day, Instagram is an image-rich zone.

While Twitter and Facebook have a mix of text-only and image posts, every post on Instagram has a photo or image. Because Instagram is primarily about pictures, it’s important to produce high-quality, stunning, and interesting photos.

Besides being highly visual, Instagram is also unique because it is primarily viewed from a mobile device. Originally, Instagram was only viewed with a handheld mobile. Today, you can view it from your desktop as well. However, only 16% of US traffic to Instagram is done so through a desktop. This means that most people are viewing images on a much smaller device than a desktop.

Instagram: Stories

When you create a YouTube channel or account, you can also create a profile picture. YouTube gives you the option of selecting a border for your image, but the size of your picture will be the same. A thumbnail of your profile picture will appear when you make comments, and it will appear beneath your videos.

The Channel Cover is a prominent place on your channel. Without your image, YouTube provides a basic gray background that does nothing to shed light on your brand.

The space requires a very large image, recommended at 2560 x 1440 pixels. So you’ll need to make sure that you produce an image large enough to fill the space. In addition, if you’re going to use a logo or words, you’ll want to make sure that it isn’t covered by your Youtube Channel icon.

Part of the reason that you want such a large image for your cover photo is that YouTube will sometimes use different portions of your image for different formats. YouTube uses a lot of formats so this is something to keep in mind.

YouTube can be displayed across a lot of different devices so it’s important to consider that for your channel cover.

Pins are the most important feature on Pinterest. Most Pinterest users are looking for things that catch their eyes because they find them beautiful. Whatever the reason, when you post pins, keep in mind that they should add some kind of value to Pinterest users.

It’s also of note that Pinterest does have a limit on the width of images, but not on the height. This means you can post square pictures, or ones that are much taller. This gives a little creativity room when it comes to posting images. Very tall images are referred to as “Giraffe Pins.” However, do keep in mind that longer pins will be cropped in the Pinterest feed.

  • Height is scaled but will be cropped in the feed if it exceeds 2.1 times the width.

Pinterest: Board Display

When you begin using Pinterest you have the opportunity to save pins to boards. This is one of the most important aspects of Pinterest because this is how people get an idea of your style. Your Pinterest doesn’t have to be all about your product, it’s just as much about establishing your brand. This can include other boards that your customers would be interested in. It could also include boards that show how your product can work WITH other products.

On your page, your boards will be displayed for people to preview. You can choose a cover photo for your board. This image will be larger than the other images, and should represent the page. Pinterest will create a collage around your cover image. If you do not select a cover image, Pinterest will arrange a collage of equal width images.

Google+ is unique to other social media networks because it allows you to create circles of friends based on shared interests. You can create multiple circles based on the criteria you set.

When you share information or images, you can decide which circle you’d like to post in. This set up serves two purposes.
