Sometimes you need a prescription medicine to make you feel better when in pain. Unfortunately, in some cases, there are prescription drugs that, if not taken as intended, could lead to prescription drug abuse.

Misuse of these drugs may cause you to get high and, ultimately, cause dependence. These prescription medicines may affect people of all age groups. However, if there’s an early intervention of prescription abuse, you can prevent it from turning into an addiction

Most Common Prescription Drugs that can Cause Addiction

People take prescription drugs for different reasons, although not all drugs end well. Others may find themselves going for more complex drugs and later facing federal drug charges because of prescription drug misuse. Here are some of the most misused drugs

    Opiates

Opiates are prescription medicines taken for acute and chronic pain. They are widely known since they are effective if taken as directed, although their major threat is that they may cause addiction to the users.

The user may consult different doctors to get more prescriptions, also known as doctor shopping. If the patient cant gets such drugs through the doctor, they may end up using a drug like heroin, which is cheaper and easier to find.

Opiates are dangerous since they can cause a slow or stopped breathing rate. They can also cause coma or even death if a person takes an overdose.

    Benzodiazepines

They are also called Benzos; these pharmaceutical drugs treat mental disorders, including panic attacks and severe anxiety. Patients can build a tolerance to Benzodiazepines if they take them for a long time resulting in addiction. Some users use Benzos for Benzos with alcohol; this strengthens its effect, which may lead to overdosing.

Although these drugs help users feel calm or reduce anxiety, they cause memory problems, slow breathing, and low blood pressure. Additionally, if a person takes an overdose, it may lead to death or coma. Stopping these drugs abruptly might cause withdrawal symptoms like seizures and an overactive nervous system.

    Sleeping Pills

Sleeping pills are categorized as sedative-hypnotics. Although most people think they can’t cause addiction, they do so quickly. The addiction grows when a user takes higher doses without consulting their physicians.

It starts by thinking that taking a higher dosage will improve their sleep quality, and they take larger amounts than recommended to get sleep. When a person tries to quit sleeping pills, they may experience withdrawal symptoms.

If you get addicted to prescribed drugs, quitting may be demanding why you should go through a medical detox center. Do not do it on your own, always seek professional help. Your doctor may suggest an inpatient or outpatient detox program.

    Conclusion

Abusing prescription medicines may cause lots of problems. They can cause drug tolerance, dependence, or even death. A person dependent on a prescription drug might need higher dosage to get the same effect. That’s why it’s recommended to make sure you get the proper medication, and before using any medicine, consult your doctor.
