    Defensive driving courses in Texas must be approved by the state of Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) as the course must meet all informational requirements and standards. In addition, they must fulfill all legal requirements in order for the course to be utilized for traffic ticket dismissal and insurance discounts.

    How Taking A Texas Defensive Driving Course Can Benefit You

    Traffic Ticket Dismissal

    In order to take texas defensive driving course to have a traffic ticket dismissed you must ask the court prior to your court day if that is something they will allow you to do. As long as you have not taken a defensive driving course within the last 12 from your violation date and your traffic violation was minor, the court should grant this request.

    After the court grants you permission to take a defensive driving course, you simply find a state approved defensive driving course that suits you and register.

    You must take and complete the course at least 7 days prior to your court date and present the court with the certification of completion that you received upon completing the course.

    Your traffic ticket will be dismissed after the court system processes your paperwork. This typically takes a couple weeks to process.

    Insurance Discounts

    Many insurance providers recognize the value of defensive driving education and offer premium discounts to drivers who have completed a state approved defensive driving course. Simply call your insurance agency and ask them if they offer such a discount. If they do, the process is fairly simple.

    Register for a state approved defensive driving course, take and complete the course and then provide your insurance company with the certification of completion. The agreed upon auto insurance discount will then be applied.
