    It involves the image formation of those objects that cannot be seen with the human naked eye. SEM can detect objects which cannot be detected by even a light microscope. It inspects the surface at high resolution. They are mostly used in medical and physical science fields.

    The Working Phenomenon Of SEM

    First, a sample is taken then a beam of electrons is shot on the surface of that sample by SEM. These electrons interact with atoms present in the sample. This interaction of electrons with atoms causes the emission of various signals. The signals emitted by the sample are collected by the detectors. The detectors send these signals to the computer system. The computer processes these signals and an image is generated.

    Elements of SEM

    The electron column, electron source, sample chamber, detectors, and computer system are the main and essential elements of SEM. These components are used in an organized manner such as the electron source producing an electron beam which is directed towards the sample chamber using an electron column. Then the signals emitted by the sample chamber are collected by the detectors, and then the computer system processes these signals and as a result image is generated.

    How Sample Is Prepared In SEM?

    Sample preparation is the main step in SEM. Without a sample, we can’t proceed further.

    • In SEM the cleanliness and dryness of the sample are compulsory to ensure the purification of the sample. Contaminated and distorted sample is avoided in SEM.
    • After ensuring the cleanliness and purification of the sample, it is coated with a thin layer of conductive material like gold or carbon, which helps enhance the quality of the image and also reduces electrostatic effects.

    Functions of SEM

    SEM is mostly used in industries and scientific work. They are most commonly used in the semiconductor industry, geology, and archeology to examine materials and make appropriate improvements in materials. In scientific work, they are used in chemistry labs for the chemical composition of elements, in biology to analyze the surface of cells, tissues, and organisms etc.

    Through the functions of Scanning electron microscopy, we can deeply understand the microscopic world. Advancement is seen in various fields of the world just because of the significance of SEM as it helps in understanding the structure and composition of different materials.
