    The determinants of mental wellness are just as varied as human experience itself, including both the genetic predisposition and the social relationships, as well as lifestyle and environmental factors.

    Biological Basis of Mental Wellness

    Mental health is based on our brain chemistry. Serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine are neurotransmitters that control mood, motivation and stress response.

    The imbalance in these chemical messengers can result in mental health problems. Genetics is also a very big factor as studies have shown that there are some mental diseases that have a genetic factor.

    The economic cost of the untreated mental health conditions is not only a matter of personal pain, but also of family, community, and even of the whole healthcare system.

    Although we cannot do anything about the variables that are beyond our control; genetics, past experiences, or some environmental circumstances, we can maximize the variables that we can control.

    This involves cultivating the relationships, building of healthy routines, professional support when necessary and establishment of environments that facilitate and not hinder psychological health.

    Our being and the duty to be well are our prerogative. When we understand that there is a complicated interplay of factors that build our psychological environment, we get the ability to be active creators of our mental health instead of passive consumers of circumstances.
