Like most of us, you probably spend hours in front of digital screens. Computers, smartphones, tablets or TVs are used for work, social interactions and entertainment. With these screens comes blue light, which is said to be harmful to our eyes. Many people claim that computer glasses and a few simple eye exercises can help reduce the symptoms of digital eye strain.

    Blue light

Blue light, also known as high-energy visible light, is a color in the visible light spectrum that human eyes can see. Blue light has a shorter wavelength compared to other visible colors on the spectrum and penetrates deeper into our eyes than other colors.

What is the effect of it on our eyes?

Some argue that blue light emitted from digital screens causes Digital Eye Strain, also known as Computer Vision Syndrome. This is a condition that can occur from prolonged use of digital screens. People who suffer from this condition often experience discomfort and reduced productivity when using their devices. Symptoms of digital eye strain include eye strain, blurred vision, dry or tired eyes and headaches.

How can I prevent digital eye strain?

If you are suffering from Digital Eye Strain, making changes to protect your eyes is essential. Start by taking regular breaks away from your device and make sure to blink regularly – this increases moisture on the surface of your eyes, which helps keep them healthy. Adjusting lighting levels, increasing the font size and using anti-glare screens may also improve comfort levels when working on devices.

Eye exercises are another helpful way to reduce the risk of digital eye strain. Move your eyes up and down, left and right or in a circular motion; this will help relax your eye muscles and prevent them from becoming strained over long periods of time. Taking short walks outside every few hours can also provide relief, as natural light has been found to be much more comfortable than artificial lighting.

Unfortunately, most of us cannot avoid digital screens. By following these steps, you can minimize your chances of developing symptoms associated with digital eye strain. With the implementation of computer glasses and a few easy exercises, you can continue to lead a productive life without sacrificing comfort or safety.

Speaking to an optometrist regarding any symptoms of digital eye strain is important as they can provide further advice and treatment options. Taking proactive steps to protect your eyes now will ensure that any potential damage is prevented and your vision remains healthy for years to come.
