For those of you who don’t know what cavities are? Cavities are these small holes in your teeth which are caused due to the decaying of your teeth. There are several home remedies which can help you to prevent the decaying of your teeth and stop it before it forms a cavity.

The treatment of cavities is done by the dentist only. These home remedies are for you to stop your teeth from forming cavities and strengthen your tooth enamel. Below mentioned are five home remedies shared by Frank Roach Dentist for tooth cavities.

    1. Oil pulling

Oil pulling is one of the ancient systems of alternative medicine called Ayurveda. This system involves swishing a tablespoon of sesame oil or coconut oil around in your mouth for a prescribed period of time, and then spitting it out.

Many people claim that this method is not scientifically supported, but research in that field indicates that it helps improve tooth health. In a study in 2009, it was found that using sesame oil in oil pulling methods reduces the amount of plaque and bacteria to some extent as a mouthwash.

    2. Aloe vera

An aloe vera tooth gel may help your teeth to fight off bacteria which cause cavities. According to a 2015 review, Aloe vera gel has an antibacterial effect which kills the harmful bacteria in the mouth. Aloe vera gel may help your teeth to remineralize enamel in their pre-cavity stage.

    3. Avoid phytic acid

Phytic acid may damage your tooth enamel, and some people also believes that cutting it out of your daily diet can help prevent tooth decay and cavities.

The foods in which phytic acid (mostly cereals and legumes) is found are – maize, wheat, rye, kidney beans, rice, broad beans, blackeye beans, navy beans, pinto beans, etc.

    4. Licorice root

Licorice root contains antibacterial properties which helps prevent the bacteria which are targeting your teeth, which in result can cause cavities. According to a small study conducted in the year 2011, sucking a lollipop which contains licorice extract might help you to prevent cavities.

However, more research in this field is needed before dentists can recommended these licorices extracted lollipops for cavity prevention.

    5. Sugar-free gum

According to the results of a study in 2015, chewing sugarless gum after your meals can help you to reduce levels of bacteria in your teeth which damages your tooth enamel.

Having less number if bacteria like this may lead you to have strong enamel which is better equipped to withstand the decay in your teeth.

So, the above mentioned are some of the home remedies for tooth cavities. Though these remedies may reduce the risk of cavities or reverse damage to tooth enamel in the pre-cavity stage.

You can use these home remedies along with the dentist-recommended techniques which includes brushing, preferably with the fluoride gel toothpaste. Just keep in mind that not all the cavities cause pain, so it is better to see a dentist regularly.

If cavities are detected early by the dentists then they can help you with the preventive action for it such as filling, crown, or other treatment for any advanced cases of tooth decay.
