There are many different choices available when dealing with acne, with benzoyl peroxide being one of the main products used by people across the world. However, did you know that BHA exfoliant  can also be used to great effect as part of your daily acne regimen?

If so, stick around while we explain what the product does and how it works its magic. You might learn a thing or two that might just help you improve your chances of achieving the smooth complexion you crave. Worth spending a couple of minutes reading, right?

    What Exactly IS BHA Exfoliant?

Essentially, BHA exfoliant  stands for beta hydroxy acid, which is used to rid the skin of dead cells. A particularly popular type of BHA is salicylic acid, which is widely used in many acne treatments – in fact, it’s probably the second-most used form of acne product in existence.

    What Makes BHAs So Effective?

The reason why BHAs are so good at penetrating the skin and clearing acne is that they’re oil-soluble. This gives them the power to get right into your pores to dissolve debris, dead cells and oil that’s collected there. They’re also great at ridding the skin of bacteria, which is half the battle for someone battling regular breakouts.

    Do BHAs Improve Skin Texture?

Absolutely, they do, yes! Their exfoliating action is known to promote skin that’s more even, as there’s much less ‘stuff’ blocking the way. In addition to promoting the turnover of cells, they clear away old skin, leaving behind a much smoother complexion.

Are BHAs OK for People With Sensitive Skin?

That’s an interesting question, as they can be a little irritating – as it’s their job to be slightly abrasive. So, if you do have sensitive skin and you want to enjoy the benefits they bring, it’s recommended that you start on a low concentration and gradually increase based on how your skin reacts. Sooner or later you’ll find your sweet spot.

What concentration of BHA should I use?

Everyone has different requirements, so it does depend on you. For the vast majority of people, a 1% to 2% BHA will suffice and will be well tolerated. If you find that a concentration at this level doesn’t give you the results you’re looking for, try something stronger. Just be cautious.

How Long Do BHAs Take to Work?

As with most acne products, it’s important to be patient and not set your expectations too high, too soon. When used as part of a comprehensive acne care regime, you should see improvements in your skin’s texture in as little as four to six weeks. That will be the case so long as you’re consistent with how you use the product.

Could BHA Exfoliant  Be the Product You’ve Been Looking For?

If you’re interested in adding something new to your acne-fighting toolkit, you should seriously consider BHAs for all the reasons mentioned above. To recap, it encourages cell turnover, gets rid of all that dead skin and oil that can cause breakouts and it typically results in a smoother complexion for those who use it. Whichever way you look at it, it’s something that’s going to enhance anyone’s fight against acne.
