This year, Americans will once again gather from California to the New York island (and Alaska and Hawaii and all the other places that are American soil) to celebrate the cherished principles of freedom and independence. From one end of the nation to the other, from the historic streets of Boston to the rugged Texas plains to the majestic landscapes of Idaho, communities come alive at night with the vibrant colors and thunderous booms of fireworks to celebrate yet another year in the US of A.
Here are four great fireworks displays and Independence Day festivities that you’ll want to consider for your 2024 Fourth of July celebration.
Boston Pops Concert Fireworks Spectacular
In the heart of Boston, the Charles River comes alive with the patriotic melodies of the Boston Pops Concert Fireworks Spectacular. Against the iconic backdrop of the Charles River Esplanade, half a million visitors gather to witness the grandeur of the 1812 Overture, conducted by the famed Boston Pops Orchestra.
Before the night arrives and the illuminations begin, you can enjoy yourself at Harborfest with food, ceremonies, concerts, hundreds of activities, and historical reenactments that would make even John Adams jealous. Then end the day with fireworks launched from Boston’s Long Wharf, which will paint a mesmerizing portrait devoted to our nation’s history and those who have fought and toiled to make it a reality.
Melaleuca Freedom Celebration in Idaho Falls
Situated along the banks of the Snake River, Idaho Falls lights up with a huge fireworks display on Independence Day. Sponsored by consumer goods company Melaleuca for decades, the Melaleuca Freedom Celebration shows that you don’t need a huge town for huge fireworks. The company is very open about the number of fireworks they use in the show — 2023 featured more than 18,000 American-made shells. And they’re always increasing the number each year. The event regularly sees over 200,000 visitors.
Before the colorful aerial displays begin, enjoy a city parade in the morning and Riverfest in the afternoon, where you’ll find food, live music, bounce houses and other activities, demonstrations, and even helicopter rides. And yes, it’s along the river.
Capitol Fourth Concert at the National Mall
In the heart of the nation’s capital, the National Mall becomes a stage for a grand display of colorful explosive displays. But there’s more than just beautiful fireworks. A Capitol Fourth showcases star-studded lineups consisting of all kinds of performers. Last year, the show was hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and the crowds were treated to Boyz II Men, Belinda Carlisle, the Sesame Street Muppets, the National Symphony Orchestra, and more.
Celebrate by watching the fireworks from the Lincoln Memorial, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, or many other places.
Freedom Over Texas in Houston
Deep in the heart of Texas, Houston hosts a celebration as vast and vibrant as the Space City itself. This Texas-sized event takes place at Eleanor Tinsley Park and Sam Houston Park and brings an attendance of 50,000 people.
But there’s more than just pyrotechnics. From live country music to charitable endeavors with the Houston Food Bank, the festivities embody the true spirit of Texan hospitality, generosity, and larger-than-life perspective.
Remember also that July is hot in Houston! Come prepared to face the heat, and keep your water close by!
Across the nation, from historic Boston to our nation’s capital to the Lone Star state and to scenic banks of the Snake River, the Fourth of July stands as a means to unite us as Americans. Whether you check out one of the great festivities from this article or find a different extraordinary location, or if you’d rather skip the fireworks shows and light off your own firecrackers, if you celebrate with unity and patriotism, then you won’t go wrong!
