There seems to be an overall heightened importance on the concept of company culture. Business leadership and corporate gurus are frequently heard using the term “company culture” in their talks.

But what is this elusive thing called company culture?

Well, according to Anne Morriss and Frances Frei at Havard Business Review, company culture is what “… tells us whether to risk telling our bosses about our new ideas, and whether to surface or hide problems.” Some companies embrace a casual culture without any predefined rules, while some companies have a formal culture and others follow a strictly formal corporate culture with clearly defined hierarchies and goals. But in essence, company culture is what initiates further innovation, and shapes employee experience.

    What is a high-performance culture?

Performance is most often linked with how the employees of an organization perform. However, that is only a slight part of the entire picture. In reality, an efficient employee motivation management plan that values employees ensures employee engagement, retention, and learning and drives an overall sense of purpose where they feel eager to improve themselves continually, lays the foundation for a high-performing culture. When employees cohesively share the same vision and work towards tangible goals, it creates a culture that looks beyond just performance.

It essentially constitutes certain rules and behaviors that help an organization attain better business outcomes which include both financial and non-financial aspects. Starting from superior levels of employee satisfaction as well as customer experience to employee retention, innovation, growth, and healthy competitiveness; all essential qualities are nurtured through a high-performance company culture.

How to build a high-performance culture?

Hiring highly-skilled professionals are certainly crucial for an organization, but that is not enough to create a high-performance culture. It is equally important to cultivate a mindset wherein they willingly share core organizational values which guide them toward the behaviors that the company leadership desires.

Developing a high-performing company culture includes the following –

    Empower your employees

If you are the decision maker in your company, try to offer your employees a voice in this process. Valuing their views and opinions is the finest way to make employees feel empowered and help them reach their highest potential. And when employees feel engaged and valued, they naturally tend to perform better. Company leadership needs to instill a culture of trust and also ensure their professional growth for employee empowerment.

    Clearly communicate company values

While business leaders strive to inculcate specific values that align with the desired company culture, it is crucial to clarify the same to all employees. This is vital because these values will lay the foundation for a high-performing culture, and also determine the company’s behavior every single day. That being said, it is equally important to ensure that the desired culture or behavior aligns with the vision and goals of the organization.

    Emphasize positive company behavior

Nurturing a resourceful and positive attitude across teams is the key to forming a high-performance culture. Employee recognition and rewards are tried-and-tested to boost employee performance and ultimately customer satisfaction and business profitability. For instance, you can reinforce positive behavior by rewarding employees who represent the values of the organization, thereby boosting their productivity.

    Inspire open communication

Encouraging the spirit of open communication is the best way to cultivate a culture of trust, openness, and clarity. It also effectively creates a healthy work atmosphere. The most efficient leaders make sure that communication among all is clear, respectful, unbiased, and fluid, starting from the entry-level employees to the management in the topmost hierarchy. Fluidity in communication helps establish clear workflows and a high-performance culture.

    Seek feedback

A company that seeks feedback to improve automatically promotes a culture of continuous improvement. But collecting feedback is not all, it is more important to evaluate the existing workflows and fine-tune them as per the feedback received. Transparent feedback is essential for assessing how employees feel about the company culture, and understanding what needs further improvement.

    Final words

Apart from these essential elements, it is also crucial to build a customer-centric policy that aligns the company and its vision mission, and beliefs with its customers. But leaders need to identify which aspects to implement first, to build teams that are high-performing and help their organization succeed.
