Payday 2 Crossplay: Cross-Play and Progression

Thinking of putting a crew together for a Payday 2 heist? If your friend is on PlayStation and you’re on PC, you’re probably asking one big question: does Payday 2 have cross-play? (Payday 2 Crossplay)

The quick answer is no. Unlike many modern titles, Payday 2 is not cross-platform between PC, Xbox, or PlayStation. This is because the game’s different versions have followed separate update paths for years, making them incompatible.

Why Your PC and Console Friends Can’t Team Up in Payday 2

The core reason for the lack of cross-play is that the PC and console versions of Payday 2 are fundamentally different. Over its long lifespan, developer Overkill Software consistently updated the PC version with new heists, characters, and weapons that never made their way to the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One editions.

Think of it like trying to read a book with a friend, but you have the brand-new extended edition and they have the original from ten years ago. Your book has extra chapters and different page numbers, so you can’t follow along on the same page. The PC version is that extended edition, while the console versions are the original.

Because of these major Payday 2 console vs PC differences, their online systems are completely incompatible. They are, in effect, different games that cannot speak to each other.

Are There Any Payday 2 Cross-Play Options That Work?

While you can’t connect a PC to a console, there is one important exception for the PC gaming community. If you and your friends all play on PC, it doesn’t matter which digital store you bought the game from. Players on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the PC version of Game Pass can all play with each other seamlessly.

Good news also exists for console players, thanks to cross-generation support. This means players within the same console family can team up. Someone on a PlayStation 5 can join a friend’s heist on a PlayStation 4, and an Xbox Series X/S user can play with someone on an Xbox One.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what works:

    • PC (Steam) + PC (Epic/Game Pass) = YES
    • PS4 + PS5 = YES
    • Xbox One + Xbox Series X/S = YES
    • PC + PlayStation or Xbox = NO
    • PlayStation + Xbox = NO

What About Cross-Progression? Can I Move My Save File?

Unfortunately, the answer here is also no. Payday 2 does not support cross-progression, which is the feature that lets you carry your character’s level, unlocks, and money between different systems. If you buy the game on PC and later on PlayStation, you will be starting over from scratch.

This limitation stems from the same core issue that prevents cross-play: the massive version differences. A save file from the up-to-date PC game contains data for items and heists that don’t even exist on the console editions, making the progress incompatible.

Even creating a Starbreeze Nebula account, which is used for newer titles, won’t help you move your Payday 2 save file. Your progress is permanently tied to the platform account (Steam, PlayStation Network, or Xbox) where you earned it.

Planning Your Next Payday 2 Heist

For a successful Payday 2 heist, your crew simply must be on the same platform family—all on PC, or all on the same console brand. While the game won’t get cross-platform support, you can now confidently organize your crew or seek out modern alternatives like Payday 3 that were built for it.
