Moving can turn your life upside down, and thinking about it can keep you from even sleeping. You can make your move easier not only by hiring movers, or thoroughly preparing for it. There’s one more way. A four-day “look-see” visit before you move will allow you to quickly get questions answered, see the city, choose a neighborhood to live in, and make the “nervousness” easier to deal with.

Day 1 – Commute & wallet reality check

Arrive in your desired city in the early morning, grab a coffee, and take the same bus, subway, or other transportation that’s popular with the residents or you. And just “loop” around the city. Believe me, this is how you will experience life in a new city. One realistic trip will cost you dozens of fashion articles and will show you a path that no tourist would ever take, but to which a local passes almost every day.

Try to have lunch at a supermarket café near the accommodation you’ve rented. Shop for food and everyday goods: it is your grocery bill that will give you the quickest estimate of the cost of your life. Take a walk in the neighborhood, visit parks.

Day 2 – Housing deep dive

Make a short list of three neighborhoods: dream, practical, and spare. Explore each of them at 10 am, 4 pm, and after dark – society changes with the sun.

Separately, we recommend looking up neighborhood crime stats online ahead of time to be prepared for where you’re moving. You can use a site like NeighborhoodScout to do this. If you’re brave enough, talk to staff at local establishments or residents about the city to get insights: ask about schools, infrastructure, how crime is, etc.

    Day 3 – Logistics shake-down

Repeat your real life: walk the dog route, test phone data in your would-be living room, find a 24-hour clinic, and a locksmith. Try looking for some activities or visiting museums and interesting places. Such a task itself will already make you explore and realize how active the city is, even if you don’t manage to get somewhere these days.

Day 4 – Lifestyle dress rehearsal

Wake up early, go to the gym, and try a night out. Experience the city at dawn and midnight. If you feel a “safe vibe,” it’s quite likely – you’re in the right place. Flag anything that’s getting in the way of closing the deal while you still have time to make a change.

    Meals & coffees$205
    Pet/child care back home$160
    4-day total≈ $1,350

Five Pro Tips from Pro Movers

    1. Travel 30–45 days before the move so leases you like are still available.
    2. Carry digital copies of ID, payslips, and a PDF of your credit score—landlords move fast.
    3. Score walkability: if the grocery haul feels heavy after 500 m, upgrade location, not biceps.
    4. Build a spreadsheet of hidden costs: banking fees, storage, and licence transfers.
    5. Record a voice memo each night ranking districts while impressions are fresh.

    Quick FAQ

How long should the trip be? Four focused days beat two unfocused weeks.

Kids in tow? Bring them on Day 3 so they test parks and schools when you’re dialled in.

Can I skip the visit? Of course, if the move you are making is out of necessity. Then traveling may be an unnecessary waste of money. But if your budget allows, such a trip can greatly reduce stress.
