Saudi Arabia is relentless in its quest to fulfil its ambitious Vision 2030 initiative by investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies

After officially declaring 2026 as the ‘Year of Artificial Intelligence’, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) has created detailed guidelines to explain what that means.

The guidelines are designed to persuade government agencies, businesses, organisations and the general public working together on AI projects.

The plan is to raise awareness of the importance of AI technologies and promote initiatives with the potential to make a significant impact in communities.

The guidelines promote programmes that deploy these technologies at scale to reflect how far Saudi Arabia has come in the advanced tech field in line with its Vision 2030 initiative.

SDAIA’s guidelines are a nationwide push to position Saudi Arabia as a major player in global AI, with clearer rules to make sure everyone is contributing to that goal.

How This Latest Development Could Impact Saudi Arabia’s Gaming Industry

Saudi Arabia has put plenty of effort into building its gaming industry, and it is one of many sectors that could be significantly impacted by the latest development.

It is expected to help the sector develop much faster, furthering the country’s bid to become a force to be reckoned with in the global gaming industry.

The Kingdom has already invested significant capital in several key areas, including eSports, game development and digital entertainment.

Saudi Arabia has also been making headlines by acquiring stakes in major gaming companies through its Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Through Savvy Games Group, they have acquired Scopely and Niantic. They also hold major stakes in Nintendo, Capcom, SNK and Take-Two.

The Saudis are also looking to take things to the next level by acquiring Electronic Arts (EA), although that mega-deal is still in the pipeline.

Aside from purchasing every major gaming company in the world, AI has played a massive role in the growth of Saudi Arabia’s gaming industry.

AI makes characters act more realistically, helps design game worlds and improves player experience.

With stronger national support for AI, game developers and companies in Saudi Arabia could get better tools, more funding and a more supportive environment to create high-quality games. This could lead to more advanced and immersive games being developed in the country.

AI can help to design smarter in-game characters, more flexible and dynamic storylines and personalised gaming experiences tailored to each player.

AI May Influence Saudi Arabia’s Stance on iGaming

Whenever there is a new update on AI and how it can power a new era of gaming, there is always a feeling that the iGaming sector could also benefit from such innovation.

This time is no different, even though Saudi Arabia has traditionally refused to shift its stance on iGaming and other gambling-related activities.

Gambling is still heavily restricted in the Kingdom. While it is no secret that there are numerous online casinos in Saudi Arabia, they are managed by foreign operators.

Saudi Arabia’s stance on iGaming stems from deeply rooted cultural values, so asking the government to perform a U-turn will take more than laying out technological factors.

The growing influence of AI has opened the door to a different angle of the licensing and regulatory conversation. AI can make it easier for the government to control digital gambling platforms by monitoring online activity. The technology is adept at detecting harmful behaviour.

AI can influence how digital entertainment is regulated by ensuring that gaming platforms operate within clear boundaries, protect citizens and maintain transparency.

Opening the door to iGaming will be a gradual process if Saudi Arabia eventually decides to explore what is generally considered to be a financial goldmine.

Bringing AI into the mix will help to create a more structured environment for digital entertainment without necessarily opening the door to traditional forms of online gambling.

Even without changes to iGaming laws, the impact of the Year of Artificial Intelligence on digital entertainment could be hugely significant.

AI-driven content creation, personalised user experiences and advanced analytics will redefine how people engage with games and online platforms.
