There’s no wrong time to visit Plitvice Lakes, but summer brings the park into full bloom. With long days, lush green surroundings, and waterfalls at their most impressive, Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of Croatia’s most breathtaking destinations, and one of its most visited. If you’re planning a trip in summer 2025, here’s what you need to know to make the most of your experience.

    The summer appeal

Sixteen terraced lakes connected by cascading waterfalls, wooden walkways, and peaceful forest trails: in summer, Plitvice looks like something out of a dream. The colors are vivid, the air is fresh, and everything feels alive. Whether you’re standing at the edge of the Big Waterfall (Veliki slap) or gliding across Lake Kozjak by boat, there’s a sense of calm that’s hard to describe and even harder to forget.

    Getting around: what to expect

You’ll be walking a lot – but in a good way. Wooden boardwalks take you past the lakes and waterfalls, while forest paths offer panoramic views from above. A boat ride across Lake Kozjak adds a quiet, scenic break, and the electric panoramic train helps you return after a long hike through the Upper Lakes.

    But what about the crowds?

Yes, Plitvice in summer is popular. That means you won’t have the park to yourself. But with a little planning, you can still enjoy moments of peace. Mornings are quieter, temperatures are cooler, and the light is soft – perfect for exploring. As the day warms up, seek shade near the waterfalls, take breaks in quieter corners, or stop for a picnic on a bench overlooking the lakes.

Slow down, look closer, enjoy more

Magdalena Petrušić, travel expert at Plitvice Lakes Tours, explains: “Plitvice is one of those places that lives up to every photo, but especially in summer, it asks for a bit of patience and planning. If you come with the right expectations, stay flexible, and let nature set the pace, the experience will stay with you for years.”

    • Go early: Arriving at opening time helps you beat both the heat and the crowds.
    • Dress smart: Lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunscreen are musts. Evenings can be cooler, so bring a light jacket.
    • Stay hydrated: Bring water, especially if you’re visiting in peak sun.
    • Buy tickets in advance: Entry numbers are limited, and in summer, the park often sells out. Secure your spot in advance!
    • Consider staying overnight: One day is enough to see the highlights, but two days let you experience the park at a slower, more natural rhythm.

    One last thought

Plitvice isn’t a place you rush through. It’s a place you walk, pause, and look – really look. In a busy world, that’s rare. So yes, it’s popular. And yes, it gets warm. But when you’re standing by a turquoise lake, surrounded by waterfalls and forest, none of that matters. It’s not just about seeing it. It’s about letting it sink in.
