Seeing ‘TTY’ on Snapchat can be confusing because the term has two completely different meanings. Depending on the context, it’s either a common chat slang abbreviation or a phone accessibility feature. Here’s how to tell the difference.

Meaning #1: “Talk To You” Slang

In most cases on Snapchat or in texts, TTY simply stands for “Talk To You.” It’s a casual, friendly way to end a conversation, similar to saying “catch you later.” It signals the chat is over for now but that you’ll connect again in the future.

You might also see its close cousin, TTYL. While similar, there’s a subtle difference:

    • TTY (Talk To You): A general goodbye that means you’ll talk again sometime.
    • TTYL (Talk To You Later): A bit more specific, often implying you’ll talk again soon, perhaps later the same day.

TTY Meaning Snapchat: Meaning #2: The Teletypewriter Accessibility Icon

If you see a small TTY symbol in your phone’s status bar, it stands for Teletypewriter. This isn’t a Snapchat feature but an accessibility setting built into your iPhone or Android device.

Teletypewriter mode is a crucial tool that helps people who are deaf or hard of hearing communicate by phone. It enables a special device to transcribe a call’s audio into readable text.

Seeing this icon doesn’t mean anything is wrong. The feature is often enabled by accident, perhaps when connecting headphones. If you don’t need it, you can easily disable it in your phone’s settings.

How to Turn Off the TTY Icon

If you see the TTY icon and don’t need the feature, turning it off is straightforward.

On an iPhone, go to Settings > Accessibility > RTT/TTY and toggle the “Software TTY” switch to the off position.

For Android users, the path is often within your Phone app. Tap the three-dot menu, go into Settings, and look for an Accessibility or TTY mode option. Once you find it, select TTY Off to disable the feature.

Turning this setting off won’t affect Snapchat or your ability to make regular calls; it only deactivates the accessibility tool.

TTY Meaning Snapchat: TTY on Snapchat: Slang vs. Setting

Now you know exactly how to read the situation. If “TTY” appears in a chat, it’s a casual “Talk To You.” If you see the icon in your status bar, it’s the Teletypewriter accessibility setting. With this confusion cleared up, you can navigate every context on the app with confidence.
