Since the publicization of the Internet in the 1990s, there are a lot of changes that have taken place. There are three types of webs; the open web, the deep web, and the dark web. The open web is the normal part of the Internet that people use. It is not anonymous and anyone can access it through various search engines like Bing and Google. The deep web is, however, a bit different from the open web. It is hidden from the general public and can only be accessed through specific search engines. Mostly, the information on the deep web is only accessible to specific people and is always protected with passwords. Here is an illustration:

Using the Internet requires one to have a device that is connected. The IP address is visible and allows networks to send information to the right destinations. However, the dark web is different. There are complex systems used and the user’s IP address is hidden. It is only accessible through specific software, mainly Tor (The Onion Router). This means that all the activities happen anonymously and the identity of the users is not revealed.

To access the dark web using Tor, one needs to download the software normally. This is not a dark web itself. However, it gives access to the sites on the web. Tor closes the messages in layers and encrypts them to ensure no person can guess the sender- hence the name. The messages are sent in nodes, where each layer is removed. This makes it hard to track the sender of the message.

Reasons Why People Use the Dark Web and the Risks

    People use the dark web for different reasons;

    Anonymization

Some people have various reasons for hiding their identity. Most of them want to stay anonymous where they want to talk about certain topics. Mostly, journalists, whistle-blowers, and protesters use the web when they want to talk or at against various uncensored activities.

    Illegal Doings

The web is also used by individuals carrying out illegal activities. Such include selling drugs, weapons, child pornography, and others.

    Onion Services

When a person wants to get hidden services, this is where they go. The IP addresses are hidden such that one cannot know the host, the content, or the location of the site.

The Risks of Using the Dark Web

With such a high-level of anonymization, there are still dangers involved with using the web. This is a perfect place for hackers to hide. Some of the things that one may have to deal with are:

Viruses. It is easy to acquire viruses from websites. This is why it is advisable not to download things from untrustworthy websites.

Webcam Hacking. Since this is an anonymous web, one is more likely to interact with people with malicious intentions. A person can easily hijack the webcam and see the things you do right from your camera lens. Hence, it is advisable to cover the camera when using the dark web.

Hackers. This is a safe forum for hackers. In one way or another, you may interact with them and this becomes easy to hack your device.

Ways People Can Protect Themselves in the Dark Web

Even though the dark web is mainly known for is illegal activities like selling drugs, weapons, among others, it is not all activities that are illegal. Hence, if one has to use the dark web, it is crucial to ensure they are safe. Here are some safe ways of using the dark web.

    Using the VPN

Even with the anonymization that comes with Tor, it is not guaranteed that one cannot be identified. There are still other ways that tech-savvies can use to reveal identity. The best way to guarantee privacy is by backing up Tor with a VPN. The VPN boosts data safety and anonymity by hiding the IP address.

    Using the Right Browser

Tor is the best browser to use on the dark web. Even though there are other browsers, it is advisable to use Tor since it comes with anonymization. It is compatible with other search engines like Google, and one can download it for free.

    Maintaining Anonymity

People should not trust anyone on the dark web. Therefore, one should not provide even slight personal detail that may lead people directly to them. They are advised to keep any private information that is likely to reveal who they are.

    Malware

Just like the open web, this part has malicious software. It is a prime forum for distributing and selling malware. Therefore, one must ensure they have strong anti-malware protection to prevent any unwanted software from installing in the device. Besides, people should not click on suspicious on the platform.

    Checking the Laws

Even if the dark web is not illegal, there are certain things and activities on the web that are. Therefore, one must avoid engaging in such activities. It is essential to know the laws that apply in their state to avoid being on the wrong side with authority.

    Conclusion

The open web, deep web, and dark web are the main parts of the Internet. The three, however, differ based on the level of privacy. Since the dark web offers total privacy, some people would prefer it. Others may use it for illegal activities or access hidden services. However, one must be cautious about various dangers like hackers, malware, and webcam hijacking. There are simple ways of remaining safe on the dark web, including remaining anonymous, using a VPN to hide the IP address, understanding the law before engaging in any activities, and taking caution on malware.
