Geometry is filled up with the study of a variety of shapes that we see around us. Not only two-dimensional but also the three-dimensional shapes that we use in our daily life find their place in geometry, and geometry helps us in understanding and solving of problems related to such shapes. Here, let us have a look at what a cube is and how to find the volume of cube, which is one of the most basic three-dimensional shapes. The most common example of a cube that you would have observed around you is an ice cube or a Rubik puzzle cube.

Any solid geometric shape that has a total of six faces that are arranged in pairs, aligned parallel to one another, with equal-length sides, and the equal area between those faces has the same volume as a cube. Volume, in math and science, refers to how much space there is within an object. Volume can be calculated by multiplying the length by width by height. Hence, the volume of a cube is the amount of space it occupies in all the three dimensions. Volume can be measured in cubic units (e.g., cm³, m³, ft³). A cube has three fundamental dimensions: height, width, and depth.

    • Length: In most cases, the length refers to the length of the cube’s front edge.
    • Height or Depth: Height refers to the cube’s side length perpendicular to the base.
    • Breadth: The length of a side perpendicular to the length and in the same plane as the base is called breadth.

Hence, the volume of a cube is given as length * breadth * height. The volume of the cube and the length of its edges are proportional. The side length ‘a’ is exactly proportional to the volume ‘V.’ This indicates that the volume of a cube will change when the side length changes. A cube has a total of 12 edges.

Now let us talk about the surface area of cube, which can simply be attained by first calculating the area of each square side and then adding it all for the six faces, which makes it equal to 6 * a * a, where ‘a’ is the measure of the length of the cube. Examples of a cube shape are three-dimensional shapes that can be seen as composed of six squares. They vary in size and are often considered to be the most symmetrical among all polyhedra.

To know more about cubes, visit the Cuemath website, which has plenty of educational material on geometrical shapes. There are worksheets that have a variety of questions with simple explanations for the students to refer to. These worksheets are printable too and are strategically aligned to help the students figure out the concept themselves with the help of good quality pictorial and visual representations hence making geometry an engaging subject to study.

Geometry worksheets can play an important role in enhancing the problem-solving and creative thinking capabilities of students. With consistent practice, the students will be able to memorize the formulas of various three-dimensional shapes as well as understand their properties and uses. The study of the geometrical shapes have their usage in higher-level mathematics, too; hence it is advisable for the students to make a hold on the basics of all the relevant formulas used in geometry. For any help on math topics, students can also register for a math tutor on the Cuemath website itself. They offer a free trial class where one can ask the teacher about the course plan and structure and virtually take math class.
