“SARMs”, Most of us wouldn’t have heard of this term ever in our lifetime, but we all should know about this drug due to its utility and efficacy. They are very much selective in their action and are performance effective. They can be widely used due to their effectiveness in the medical field. They are a type of new generation androgens with unknown potential to treat human diseases. It is one of the most popular drugs in the present world. It has also been illegally used by some athletes to enhance their performances in their respective sports.

So you must know what SARMs are and their status in the present world due to their high potential as a curing drug. More Information on it is given below-

    What are SARMs?

Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs). They are a type of androgen receptor ligand drug. It is expected that they have similar effects as androgenic drugs on their biological targets but are much more reasonable in their action, making them be widely used all across the world. Their chemical class is steroidal and nonsteroidal; their biological class is androgen receptors. They were developed to reduce the vast variety of side effects followed by anabolic-androgenic steroid hormone therapy (AAS). AAS therapies usually resulted in side effects on the user that was anabolic (increased weight, muscle mass etc.) and androgenic (increased acne, baldness etc.).

The side effects intensity varied depending on the derivative of therapy used by the patient. It has a vital role in this therapy as they play a dual role by addressing the medical problem and minimizing the undesired effects. Thus, enhancing the efficacy of the drug on the users. It can also be used orally, and its molecules selectively target different androgen receptors of the body in a unique manner.

In laboratories, it has shown their diversified nature to treat a vast variety of pathogens and diseases. They also do not show any severe side effects on the users like the AAS therapies. Hence, this naturally makes SARMs a more suitable choice for patients than the AAS therapies.

    Selectivity on men and women

Among men, a SARM that cure medical issues without causing an imbalance of reproductive hormones and side effects on reproductive organs is more desirable.

Among women, a SARM that can cause bone retention can carry out androgen functions without causing the growth of male characteristics and liver dysfunction is desirable.

    The legal status of SARMs

As of the latest reports, SARMs are kept in the grey area (not suitable to be used by the public) by many medical organizations worldwide. In 2019, the Selective androgen receptor modulators control act was introduced in the United States Congress, which aimed at providing SARMs with an appropriate schedule by its potential for abuse. It was an extension of the Controlled Substances act.

This would have qualified it to be used by highly certified medical practitioners in a limited amount and would have helped many patients as SARMs was expected to go in the Schedule III category. But this act never passed through the USA congress, keeping it in the grey area only, making it unsuitable for human consumption. Thus, as of now, SARMs cannot be prescribed by any medical practitioner to any patients and also cannot be advertised/marketed by any agency. However, it can be purchased online only for research purposes and should not be consumed by humans.

Hence, SARMs till now are not widely used but have tremendous potential to be used in the medical field in this era. It is only a matter of time till they are utilized on a large scale. Still, one needs to be cautious about its side effects also, like the use of the large amount of SARMs have caused life-threatening reactions, including liver toxicity among some users.

So, SARMs can prove to be a boon only if used judiciously.
