Do you feel that it’s time to upgrade or replace your Mac? Whether you are upgrading to a new model or selling your Mac, there are various things to do. You want to back up your data and erase all personal information from your Apple account. Here are essential measures to take.

    1. Back up your data

Backing up your data is one of the vital steps to take before selling your Mac. Not doing this means you will be unable to access critical documents such as photos and files that you may need later on.

The good thing about Apple devices is that the company provides an excellent way to back up your files, thanks to the built-in time machine tool. You can also back up your data on an external hard disc or third-party app. After doing this, visit the Sell My Mac website to find out the procedure for selling your device.

    2. Log out from Apple

Sign out from Apple by logging out from your Apple ID and other internet accounts. Not logging out may compromise your security since the next user may access your personal information, such as iCloud photos and files. Logging out will also sign you out of apps such as: the AppStore, iMessage, and FaceTime. To sign out of your Apple ID, go to system preferences, click sign out on the bottom left side of the window, then select sign out.

As you sign out, you will get a prompt asking if you wish to retain a copy of your contacts, calendar, and other information. Unselect the box to ensure that you don’t leave any data on your Mac.

    3. Cancel AppleCare+

The AppleCare+ plan extends the coverage period, and most users love it since Macs are expensive. This plan offers various incidents of protection in case of accidental damage to your device, but if you are selling your Mac you should cancel the plan or transfer your Applecare+ to your newly acquired device.

If you cancel the plan, you will get a refund depending on the remaining time on your subscription. You can transfer the plan to your new Mac, but you need proof of purchase for the new device. You will get many other legit Apple products from the Sell My Mac website, and you will get all the necessary documents and warranty upon purchase.

    4. Disable FileVault

Your data is encrypted on your device’s hard drive because of the File Vault feature available. You should turn this off so that the new Mac user can access and use the Mac without challenges. To turn off this feature, go to settings, then privacy and security, then File Vault, and then turn it off.

    5. Remove the Mac from your Apple account

Remove your device from your list of Apple devices. You may also have other Apple devices, and not removing the mac from the list means you will still receive verification code requests on the old Mac. Go to settings and profile, then select remove from the account. You can also do this from the Apple ID website.

     6. Reset your device

Once done with all the mentioned steps, you should now erase Mac OS and reinstall it. There are various ways to reset your device, depending on the model. You will get the option from the Mac settings, then follow the instructions to erase all your data from the hard drive. You can also use the boot recovery if you can’t find the settings. Again, you will also get a guide on the Apple website on how to reinstall Mac OS.

    7. Clean the device

Clean your Mac thoroughly before giving it away. Use a soft or lint-free cloth to wipe the screen and exterior parts of the device. Use compressed air to get rid of any debris and dirt that may have accumulated on the keyboard, ports, and air vents.

In summary, there are various things to do before selling your old Mac. Consider the steps mentioned above, and erase all your data from your device. This ensures safety of your data and makes it easy for the new user to use the device.
