When it comes to home security, most people immediately think of standard solutions: installing alarms, surveillance cameras, and robust locks. But what if we approach the issue from a different angle and consider unconventional methods that can make your home an impregnable fortress?

Here are ten unusual ways you can deploy to enhance the security of your dwelling, whether it’s an apartment or a house.

    1. Interactive signs

Funny and creative signs on your property can deter intruders. For example, a sign saying “Warning, this area is guarded by drones!” or “Protected by a laser system” can create doubts and make potential intruders think twice about your home’s actual security.

    2. Secret doors and rooms

If your home contains valuables or important documents, create a hidden space for their storage. This could be a secret room behind a bookshelf or a concealed compartment under the stairs. Such hidden places are hard to find and provide an extra layer of protection for your valuables.

    3. Virtual guards

Modern technology allows the use of virtual guards that react to movement and transmit live images to your smartphone. This could be a pan-tilt-zoom camera or even a drone that patrols the area around your home. These devices not only detect movement but can actively deter intruders with sound signals or light effects.

Before purchasing and launching a drone, study the laws regarding drone use and check if registration is required. Note that in the recent years regional regulations were enacted, prohibiting or restricting drone flights. Therefore, before launching your drone, make sure there are no restrictions in your area without proper authorization from local authorities.

    4. Green barriers

Use nature to create natural barriers. Tall thorny bushes or dense hedges can not only beautify your property but also make access to your home more difficult. They can be as effective as fences while looking much more attractive.

Barberry, with its edible fruits and numerous thorns, can replace barbed wire when densely planted. Blackberry, covered with sharp spikes, will create a formidable barrier for intruders. Blackthorn, a beneficial shrub, is also ideal for hedges. Trifoliate orange, the most frost-resistant citrus, retains its thorns even in winter, providing year-round protection. Finally, roses – the most luxurious hedges – can be a reliable barrier if you choose thorny varieties, and their petals can be used for making jam or wine.

Despite being a relative of raspberries, this black berry has the amusing nickname “Hedgehog.” “Hedgehog berry” shows its prickly nature through the thorns on its bush. If you plant it along a fence or create a hedge, it will provide protection from unwanted guests.

    5. Illusion of presence

Create the impression that someone is always home, even when you’re not. Modern technology allows the use of smart devices to control lighting and appliances. For example, smart bulbs can be set to turn on and off at different times, mimicking the presence of people. You can also use smart speakers to occasionally play sounds that mimic conversations or TV noise.

The Xeoma video surveillance program serves as a centralized system for controlling smart devices and automating processes in the home. It offers a wide range of modules and features, allowing not only to monitor the area but also to integrate third-party devices for remote control. With Xeoma, you can automate gate opening when recognizing an authorized vehicle license plate or face, monitor the perimeter with the “Loitering detector,” prevent fires with the “Smoke detector,” and much more. Xeoma also provides modules for integrating with external devices, such as automatic curtains or a TV, as well as “Modbus controller” and “GPIO” module for more tech-savvy users, enabling the creation of their own Internet of Things (IoT) system.

    6. Fake cameras and alarms

Sometimes the mere presence of a security system can deter intruders. Install fake surveillance cameras and dummy alarm devices in visible places. This is a budget-friendly way to create the illusion of full protection and make criminals think twice before acting (remember speed cameras in your city – did you know that some of them are fakes?).

    7. Controlled social media

Be cautious about what you post on social media. Announcing that you’re going on vacation can be an invitation for intruders. Instead, share photos and impressions after returning home to avoid drawing attention to your absence.

Some devices, like the iPhone, automatically include GPS location data, which experts say can be easily used to track users if uploaded to a site that doesn’t remove this information. To prevent location data from being attached to your photos when using the Camera app, go to “Settings” > “Privacy & Security” > “Location Services” > “Camera” and select “Never.”

    8. Using sound effects

Install motion sensors that activate sound effects when movement is detected. These can be barking dogs, alarm signals, or even recorded voices imitating conversations. Such unexpected sounds can scare off potential intruders.

    9. Smart sensors and technologies

Modern smart technologies offer numerous security solutions. Vibration sensors can detect attempts to break windows or doors, while smart locks and doorbells with cameras allow you to control access to your home. All these devices can be connected to your smartphone, enabling you to respond quickly to any threats.

    10. Community support

Create a community of neighbors who will look out for each other’s safety. Organize groups in messengers or social networks where you can quickly report suspicious activity. Collective efforts and mutual assistance can significantly enhance security in your neighborhood.

If you are considering organizing such a community but do not want your phone number to be visible to strangers, create a community in Telegram – there you can make your number invisible to all users not in your contacts. Go to “Settings” > “Privacy and Security” > “Phone Number” > “Who can see my phone number” and select “My Contacts.” You can also specify who can always see it and who can never see it.

    Conclusion

Enhancing home security isn’t limited to installing standard surveillance and alarm systems. Using unconventional methods can not only provide extra protection but also make your home an impregnable fortress. Approach the issue creatively, use modern technologies, and don’t forget about neighborly support. Ultimately, your home’s security depends on your initiative and willingness to adopt new solutions.
