Decks are more than house extensions. They are an integral part of your outdoor space, serving as a haven for socialization, entertainment, and leisure. However, some homeowners fail to care for their decks properly, making them unsanitary and unsafe. Here are five valuable tips to help you efficiently maintain your deck and extend its lifespan.

    Conduct Regular Inspections

Regular inspections are integral to your deck’s longevity. Perform extensive inspections to help you determine potential issues that can escalate if left unaddressed. Check for signs of deck rotting, such as discolored wood, soft areas, standing water around or on the deck, mildew, mold, insect infestation, and spongy wood.

Scan for damaged or loose screws, check the condition of the ledger, railings, stairs, wood posts, concrete footings, and other parts of the deck substructure. If your deck needs replacing due to hazardous conditions, consult a professional deck installeror contractor immediately.

    Clean Your Deck

Even if you don’t use your deck often, it is essential to clean it. Sweep the deck surface weekly to remove debris, dirt, and dust. While wood decks are relatively easy to clean, they are still vulnerable to mildew, mold, algae, and discoloration, especially if there is dirt buildup or excessive leaves.

Seasonal changes, especially winter, can significantly influence your deck’s quality. During these cold months, clear off ice and snow using a broom or plastic shovel to avoid damaging the surface. Cleaning your deck, regardless of season, helps enhance its overall appearance and functionality.

    Be Mindful of Your Furniture

Some homeowners make the mistake of overloading their decks, assuming that all furniture is built alike. While you can design your deck however you prefer, it is essential that you choose furnishings designed for outdoor deck use. Heavy furniture pieces with abrasive materials and rough edges are not deck-friendly, as they can cause scratches and extensive damage.

Select outdoor furniture that can withstand the changing weather and seasons. Utilize furniture protectors to protect your deck surface from scrapes and scratches. You can also place mats or outdoor rugs under the furniture to lessen its impact. Avoid dragging the furniture when rearranging and lift it instead.

    Cover It

Another practical maintenance tip is to cover your deck. Keeping your deck covered helps increase its lifetime and minimize wear and tear. You can use furniture covers or install a retractable deck covering. If your budget permits, consider adding a permanent cover so you don’t need to worry about rain or extreme heat. Covering your deck not only safeguards your outdoor furniture but also your home interior, as it prevents harsh sunlight from penetrating.

    Seal Your Deck

Sealing your deck is another effective way to preserve your deck. It helps protect it from insects, mold, UV damage, splitting, and moisture. Select a deck-sealing product that suits your deck type, budget, and climate.

    Endnote

Deck upkeep should be a priority of every homeowner. With these valuable tips, proper planning, and professional assistance, you can easily care for your deck and improve its beauty and longevity.
