Do you like the look of a diamond but not the price tag? You’re not alone. The average cost of a diamond engagement ring is $5,830. And that’s just the average. If you have your heart set on a designer label or a particularly large stone, you could be looking at spending tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of dollars.

Fortunately, there are some beautiful and more affordable alternatives to diamonds. One option is white sapphires. Sapphires come in various colors, but white sapphires specifically resemble diamonds in appearance and hardness.

Of course, there are some major differences between white sapphires and diamonds. Keep reading to learn more about these two stones and decide which is the best choice for you.

    White Sapphires

First, let’s take a closer look at white sapphires. As we mentioned, white sapphires are part of the Sapphire family. All sapphires are gem-quality corundum, that is, aluminum oxide with trace elements that give each sapphire its unique coloration. The most common colors of sapphire are blue, yellow, and pink, but they can also be found in green, purple, orange, and – of course – white.

When it comes to hardness, white sapphires rate a 9 on the Mohs scale. For reference, diamonds are a 10 on the Mohs scale. That means that white sapphires are just as durable as diamonds and can withstand the wear and tear of everyday life.

In terms of price, white sapphires are much more affordable than diamonds. So, if you’re looking for a diamond alternative that won’t break the bank, white sapphires could be a good option.

    Diamonds

Now let’s take a look at diamonds. As we mentioned, diamonds are rated a 10 on the Mohs scale, making them the hardest naturally occurring substance on Earth. That hardness is what gives diamonds their incredible durability. A diamond can last a lifetime (or even longer) when properly cared for.

Of course, that durability comes at a price. Diamonds are also the most expensive gemstone on the market. The price of a diamond is determined by its “4Cs”: carat, color, clarity, and cut.

    • The carat weight of a diamond determines how big it is. The higher the carat weight, the more expensive the diamond.
    • The color of a diamond is graded on a scale from D (no hue) to Z (a yellow-hued diamond). Diamonds with no hue are rarer (and more expensive).
    • Clarity is how many blemishes or inclusions and is judged on a 6-point scale from included to flawless. Flawless diamonds are very rare (and very expensive).
    • The cut is how well the diamond has been cut and includes the height, depth, angles, and other factors. A well-cut diamond will reflect light better and appear more sparkly.

    What To Choose?

So, which should you choose – white sapphires or diamonds? As you can see, these two stones have some major differences.

If you’re looking for a stone that resembles a diamond, white sapphires could be a good option for you. Sapphires also have the added benefit of being more affordable than diamonds.

However, diamonds are the way to go if you’re looking for a stone with maximum hardness and durability. Diamonds are also popular for engagement rings and other fine jewelry.

Of course, the final decision is up to you. Consider your budget, style preferences, and durability when making your decision. Whichever stone you choose, you can be sure you’re getting a beautiful and valuable piece of jewelry.
