Gold coins have a long, rich history, and enthusiasts prize them tremendously because of their rarity and significance.

Rare gold coin collecting can be exciting and profitable, but it is important to proceed carefully. Also, it is important to research and engage with reliable traders, like any other investment.

Here are five exceptional rare gold coins for individuals looking to start a collection or add to an existing one.

    1.   1933 Double Eagle

The 1933 Double Eagle is the most famous gold coin in the world. Originally minted by the US government in 1933, over 445,000 coins were produced but were never released into circulation due to the Gold Confiscation Order of 1933. The US Mint melted down most coins and gave few to museums for display. In 1944, a few were discovered in possession by a Philadelphia jeweler, and the US government subsequently seized them. In 1996, one of these coins was sold at auction for $7.6 million, making it the most valuable gold coin in the world at the time.

    2.   1804 Draped Bust Dollar

One of the rarest and most expensive coins is the 1804 Draped Bust Dollar. Despite its date, it was produced in 1834 as a present for foreign dignitaries. These coins, of which only 15 are known to exist, are highly prized by collectors. One broke the previous record for the most expensive coin ever sold when it fetched $4.14 million at auction in 1999.

    3.   1795 Small Eagle $5

The 1795 Small Eagle $5 coin is considered one of the rarest and most valuable early US gold coins. Only three exist, and they were minted in Philadelphia in 1795. Collectors highly sought this coin due to its rarity and historical significance. In 2007, one sold at auction for $5 million, making it one of the most expensive coins ever.

    4.   1861 Confederate Half Eagle

The 1861 Confederate Half Eagle is a rare gold coin minted during the Civil War by the Confederate States of America. Only four exist, and they were minted in New Orleans in 1861. Collectors highly prize these coins due to their historical significance and rarity.

    5.   1907 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle

The 1907 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle is a gold coin minted in response to President Theodore Roosevelt’s call to redesign US coinage. A fraction of these coins were minted and highly sought by collectors due to their artistic design and rarity. In 2005, one sold at auction for millions of dollars, setting a new record for the most expensive US coin ever sold.
