Set among the vineyards of California wine country is a sprawling estate populated by horses and their owner, Ann Lesley Smith. A philanthropist and equestrian expert, Smith has spent her years on earth following her passions, whether that was music, media, or faith. Now, a special horse named Amir Fadjur Salaam has awakened a new purpose in Smith: helping people find peace in times of deep division.

Amir Fadjur Salaam, a purebred Arabian stallion, is the direct descendant of one of the most well-known and celebrated Arabian horses in recent history, The Fabulous Fadjur. It is this legacy that has made Amir so distinctive.

Known for his empathy and almost human-like understanding of people, The Fabulous Fadjur was a model example of what makes Arabians so special. Amir inherited those traits, and Smith believes that this unique personality could change people’s lives — and possibly the world.

    The Arabian mystique

The Arabian horse has held a near-mythic status worldwide since Bedouin tribes began breeding the horse thousands of years ago. Viewed as far more than just workhorses, these horses were bred to be part of the family unit and eventually became widely known for their emotional intelligence and sensitivity.

“Arabian horses can read and respond to human cues and behavior,” explains Smith. “They had that bred into them thousands of years ago, and those attributes continue to define the breed.”

Smith saw those unique qualities in Amir immediately. “He has the same character and intuition that made The Fabulous Fadjur so famous,” she says.

There have been many over the years who have considered themselves keepers of the Arabian lineage, becoming careful stewards of the unique bloodline. Smith considers herself part of that generational stewardship, another link in the chain that travels back thousands of years.

    Finding purpose through Amir

However, it wasn’t Amir’s pedigree or personality alone that made him so extraordinary or influential to Smith. It was his potential.

“I feel like he embodied peace,” says Smith.

Smith took a cue from how she felt around Amir and decided to open her estate to others who may have been seeking rest, a break from the hustle and bustle of life, or a window into their own sense of purpose.

“I see how people relax when they are around the free-roaming Arabian horses,” says Smith. “People are not used to witnessing that kind of freedom.”

Smith finds it her duty to be a steward of Amir’s capacity for connection. Through her work, she has learned that Arabian horses were long used as symbols of goodwill between nations. She believes that this purpose could be renewed, and that it is an especially important time to seek peaceful connection.

“We live in a very divided time,” says Smith. “It’s also hard to find authenticity these days, with everything being digitally-based. I believe that Amir could be the key to better connections worldwide.”

Deeper meaning and a slower pace

With Amir acting as an Ambassador of Peace, Smith has been able to teach others the lessons that Amir taught her. “His role is not about spectacle, it’s about legacy,” she says.

Smith hopes to reintroduce the Arabian breed to the world as one of distinction and as a bridge between people, cultures, and authentic communication. Her efforts are about sharing knowledge and giving back to the community, encouraging others to see Arabian horses like Amir as partners in the shared human story.

Smith feels that Arabian horses like Amir could even be used as workbenches for technological advancements. She got the idea from seeing the Boston Dynamics robot Atlas, a humanoid robot built with “strength and intelligent autonomy”. While Smith thought the robot design was incredible, she noted that developers still struggled to instill a sense of human-like empathy into the technology. That is where she feels Amir comes in.

“ Bedouin tribes were able to ‘upload’ this empathy and understanding into these horses thousands of years ago,” Smith explains. “I think we can look at that example and apply it to today’s advanced AI technology as we strive to make it more human-like.”

    Defining her current chapter

In years past, Ann Lesley Smith’s story has been defined by pursuit and constant movement. Today, she wants her story to be about peace and intention. Her days are structured around care for Amir, the people who visit her estate, and the world at large, which seems increasingly divided.

Smith realized that she was entering a new chapter shaped by a horse with a deep legacy and the enduring human desire to find meaning and connection with others.
