If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re considering buying some rectangular air filters.

You’ve probably noticed that rectangular air filters are very different from filter shapes such as round and square because it can be pretty tricky to find your desired dimensions from 16x24x1 air filters to 16x20x2 air filters.

So let’s find out the best way to buy this type of filter by looking at the tips listed below.

    Measure Your Space

The first thing you should do when shopping for a rectangular air filter is to measure your space. You need to know how much room you have available to find an appropriately sized filter.

Use a tape measure and ensure it’s accurate by placing it against a wall or door frame. Then measure the width and length of your space so you know how big of an air filter you need.

For example: If your window frame measures 16 inches wide by 20 inches high by 2 inches deep (16×20×2 air filters), subtract 2 inches from the length and width to leave 14×18×2 inches of space inside the frame.

The filter should fit snugly inside this space without touching either side or the top of the frame.

    Select Your Filter Type

Filters come in two main types: electrostatic and pleated.

Electrostatic filters are more effective at removing dust but cost more than pleated filters. However, pleated filters are less expensive and can be used in residential and commercial settings.

    Verify MERV Rating

The MERV rating or the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value of the filter indicates how well it traps particles from entering your home’s air supply while running through the HVAC system (or furnace).

A higher MERV rating means less dust in your home’s air supply, which makes it healthier for everyone.

Make Sure the Filter is Cleanable

Rectangle air filters come in two main types: disposable and washable.

Disposable air filters tend to be cheaper and easier to use, but they require regular replacement (about every three months). Washable filters last longer but require more maintenance and may be more challenging to install.

Some cleaners are made specifically for washing rectangular air filters, while others can be used on both types of filters. The important thing is choosing a cleanser that doesn’t damage your filter or leave behind any residue that could clog up your HVAC system.

    Don’t Forget the Frame!

The frame is an integral part of your air filter. It’s what holds everything together, and it can determine how well your filter works.

A reasonable frame will provide a solid platform for the filter materials to sit on and help distribute air evenly.

A lousy frame may not be able to support all the weight, which could restrict airflow and increase your chances of getting dust inside.

When choosing an air filter, make sure you’re buying one with a sturdy frame so that it can support all of its weight without falling apart while also allowing plenty of airflows.

    Final Thoughts

So, you know what type of air filter you want. The next question is: Where do you buy it?

The Internet is a great place to shop for square and rectangular air filters, but you can also go to a home improvement store or even the local hardware store.

If you’re buying a new frame, make sure that it’s included in the price of the filter. It doesn’t cost much extra and will make your life easier when installing the new filter.
