What’s Next for The Walking Dead Franchise After 2025?

In October, the third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon concluded, promising one more run out for the titular character who’s been there since the beginning. It ended a pretty stacked year for the franchise, one which saw two spin-off shows run 15 episodes and another released in 2024 surge in viewership after a platform change.

Even though the original TV series shuffled to its conclusion on 20 November 2022, The Walking Dead has continued to run riot and release new content regularly. In fact, seven individual seasons of TV have been shown just since that date. It’s been another very strong year for TWD, so fans are naturally wondering what’s to come.

A Resurgent 2025 for The Walking Dead

While blockbuster franchises that have sprawled out from the big screen onto TV screens have continued to lament a kind of fatigue for their settings, The Walking Dead has carried on strongly. One of the finest examples of this comes in the form of 2024’s The Ones Who Live, surging after its premiere dates.

Similarly to Breaking Bad when it came to the streamer, The Ones Who Live enjoyed incredible success after it hit Netflix in January 2025. As is loosely found by an onlooker at Forbes, the six-episode miniseries climbed to second on the platform after its first week. Not long after that, the series expanded further.

Leaning into this rampant popularity, Rarestone Gaming released The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live into the ever-competitive space of new casino slots. Landing in September 2025, it remains among the most popular official AMC TWD slots going. Like the show, it leans heavily into the reunion of Rick Grimes and Michonne.

After The Ones Who Live landed, so too did the second season of The Walking Dead: Dead City. Following Maggie and Negan in New York, it saw a decent uptick in viewer sentiment on review platforms from Season 1. Similarly, Season 3 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon gained better scores across the board than its earlier run-outs.

More on the Way for The Walking Dead

One of the most intriguing planned outings for The Walking Dead franchise to come is another anthology series under the Tales of the Walking Dead banner. Following on from the mid-2022 series, what’s currently labeled as More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe is now in development and will feature six episodes.

Scott Gimple, who was the showrunner of The Ones Who Live and the original show from the fourth to the eighth season, will be running this mini anthology series. It’ll also apparently be made for AMC’s Content Room, which is focused on digital originals. So, each can stand as a more detached one-shot rather than infusing it all into a cohesive show for TV.

Outside of More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe, it’s been confirmed that the fourth season of Daryl Dixon will be its conclusive last. Already filming in Spain, it could be penciled in for a 2026 release and may bring Daryl and Carol back home. At the end of October, Dead City also began filming its third season in Massachusetts.

Next year may be even bigger for The Walking Dead with its anthology series being joined by a Daryl Dixon finale and what’s likely to not quite be the last of Dead City. After that, there’s still a whole zombie-infested world of stories to explore.
