Back pain is one of the most frustrating conditions a person can live with. For the millions of people suffering from a herniated disc, the choice often feels like a coin flip between endless conservative treatments that do not fix the root cause and surgery that carries real risks and a long recovery. But a growing body of clinical evidence points to a third path, one that is minimally invasive, image-guided, and rooted in the science of oxygen and ozone.

The Gap Between Conservative Care and Surgery

Lumbar disc herniation affects between 5 and 20 adults per 1,000 people every year. For many of those patients, the journey is exhausting. Physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications may ease the symptoms, but they rarely address what is actually happening inside the disc. Surgery, on the other hand, is a significant undertaking that not every patient wants or is eligible for.

This is the therapeutic gap that has long frustrated both patients and spine care specialists. There is a real need for a treatment that goes beyond symptom management but stops well short of open surgery.

    How Oxygen Ozone Therapy Works

Oxygen ozone therapy works by injecting a precise mixture of oxygen and ozone gas directly into the affected intervertebral disc. The ozone reacts with the proteoglycans in the nucleus pulposus, which are the molecules responsible for retaining water and giving the disc its volume. As those molecules break down, the disc shrinks. Even a modest reduction in disc volume can meaningfully reduce pressure on the surrounding nerve roots, which is exactly where the pain originates.

Research published in peer-reviewed literature backs this up. A meta-analysis examining prospective studies on ozone therapy for lumbar disc disease found a mean improvement of 4.25 points on the visual analogue pain scale and a mean improvement of over 20 points on the Oswestry Disability Index, both clinically meaningful outcomes. The therapy also carries a notably lower complication rate compared to surgical discectomy.

What Makes the Triojection System Different

SpinaFX has built its flagship product, the Triojection System, around this science. The system delivers oxygen and ozone through a minimally invasive, image-guided approach, giving physicians precise control over where and how the treatment is administered. That level of precision matters enormously in spine care, where millimeters can make the difference between effective treatment and missed targets.

The clinical data behind the Triojection System is substantial. A study of 283 patients found that intradiscal ozone injections were associated with a statistically significant reduction in herniated disc volume, with an average reduction seen in over 96% of treated discs at the six-month mark. That kind of consistency is not common in minimally invasive treatments.

Adding to its credibility, the U.S. FDA has granted the Triojection System Breakthrough Device Designation for minimally invasive lumbar disc treatment, a recognition reserved for devices that show significant promise for serious conditions.

Who Is a Candidate for This Treatment

The ideal candidate for ozone disc therapy is someone with a contained lumbar herniated disc who has not found lasting relief from conservative care but is not yet at the point where surgery is the only option. Because the procedure is minimally invasive and does not require general anesthesia, it is also a realistic option for patients who might not tolerate a more aggressive surgical approach.

Image guidance, typically using fluoroscopy or CT, ensures that the gas mixture reaches exactly the right location. That precision also contributes to the therapy’s strong safety profile.

    A Reason for Optimism

The conversation around spine care is changing. For too long, patients with herniated discs have been told to wait it out or prepare for surgery. Oxygen ozone therapy represents a scientifically grounded, clinically supported middle ground that is finally getting the serious attention it deserves.

For patients and physicians looking to learn more about how the Triojection System is advancing minimally invasive spine care, SpinaFX is a good place to start.
