San Diego has one of the premier bayside convention spaces in the nation, plus several smaller convention and trade-show spots around the metropolitan area. People attending conventions or trade shows have multiple opportunities to unwind after spending the day immersed in conversations and conferences. Even fun conventions like Comic-Con can take a toll just due to the noise and crowds that you have to deal with. Being able to get away and allow yourself to exhale is essential. You have a lot of options, from parks and the harbor to a nearby San Diego casino and card room.
Seek out Open Space
One option, if you want to take a walk away from the convention crowd, is to seek out open spaces. San Diego has plenty of smaller parks as well as space by the bay. For example, if you love ships and sailing, there’s the Maritime Museum, a collection of ships along the Embarcadero west of downtown; you have your choice of exhibitions, performances and tours of National Historic Landmark Vessels. Also by the bay are Shelter Island, Harbor Island, and the Embarcadero Marina Parks North and South. Take a leisurely stroll along waterfront walking paths while watching boats go by.
Just north of downtown San Diego is the world-renowned Balboa Park. Visit one of the many museums or gardens, such as the Botanical Building, which reopened in December 2024 after a substantial remodel. Or, grab something to eat at one of the park’s cafes and hang out by the fountain or lily pond.
Take a Harbor Cruise
If you were hoping to get a little time on the water while attending your convention or trade show in San Diego, head to the harbor for a sightseeing cruise. Companies offer cruises of varying lengths, and you can usually buy tickets online.
Keep in mind that the Maritime Museum has sailing adventures on some of its ships, too. Many of these are longer cruises, taking a few hours. But if you have a special interest in, say, naval vessels or tall ships, you could have a memorable trip if you have the time.
Let Off Steam in a Casino
What if your idea of relaxing and unwinding isn’t sailing or hanging out, but playing games of chance? You won’t have to travel far; head to Chula Vista to Seven Mile Casino, located off Interstate 5. This casino in the San Diego region has been in operation for over 70 years, originally as the Village Club Card Room.
The casino’s proximity to the bay means you’ll enjoy a cool breeze when you step outside; this is especially refreshing in the summer, or if you’ve just come over from a crowded convention hall. Play both Cal games and poker, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Chula Vista casino aims to be friendly to both beginners and experienced players, so don’t assume that you won’t find appropriate games for your skill level.
Grab a Bite to Eat Away From the Crowd
Sure, there are restaurants near your convention or show. But they’re likely filled with other attendees, and you won’t be able to escape the trade-show talk. Instead, venture away from the convention area and seek out other establishments. If you’re visiting Seven Mile Casino, check out Sammy’s Restaurant & Bar, located onsite. A 24-hour main menu, weekend brunch menu, and happy hour menu offer so many options that you’ll always find something you want to try.
Sammy’s has been in Chula Vista since 1989 and has become a popular spot for great food. Menu options range from shared plates to Asian and Mexican-inspired cuisine to entrees like lobster, steak, and a luxurious wagyu cheeseburger. Do you have dietary restrictions? While you’ll always want to double-check about ordering with allergies and other health issues, the kitchen aims to have something available for everyone if possible. From plant-based burger patties to gluten-free meals, different dietary requirements are welcome.
