    Fairy Chimneys

    Fairy chimneys are one of the most popular attractions in Cappadocia, Turkey. During the Bronze Age, troglodytes carved homes into the rock faces of the valley walls.

    Early Christians would retreat to these rock-faced churches to escape persecution. Nowadays, fairy chimneys are tall cone-shaped rock formations that are a unique feature of this semi-arid region.

    Underground Cities

    A major attraction of Cappadocia is the underground city. It has over two hundred churches and is home to several famous monuments. A few of these buildings have survived through the centuries. During the 10th and 11th centuries, the underground city was the hub of religion and education. The Christian population in the region became displaced from the area after the Lausanne Treaty. The Christians were forced to migrate from the city.
