Cloud computing has been a hugely popular hit for many businesses around the world. For those not in the know, it’s the process whereby businesses can access computing services like servers, storage, databases, networking, software, and more over the internet, or “the cloud,” rather than owning and maintaining physical hardware and infrastructure.

However, while there are numerous advantages and benefits that can be obtained by using it, there are some dangers that can also be experienced if the right measures are not in place.

Cybersecurity and cloud security remain a huge priority for businesses that use the cloud for their services. According to estimates, global cloud spending is expected to grow more than 20% in 2024 due to the desire to move to a cloud-first approach.

If the right measures are not taken, information can become compromised as technology not only helps those who look to use it for good but for those who also seek vulnerabilities in the protection in order to steal personal data and sensitive information.

What trends are expected to take place in 2024?

As cloud security is an ever-changing and progressive industry, there are numerous trends and developments that are likely to be experienced over the course of the year. Some of the trends that we can expect to see emerge in 2024 are:

    Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA)

Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) is a process that continues to gain prominence as organizations recognize the importance of verifying every user and device. It uses an approach of “never trust, always verify”, meaning everyone who has access to the network must validate their identities to eliminate any potential threat risk. Gambling sites are among the key adopters of this technology, as they use Know Your Customers (KYC) methods to ensure they verify the identities of users, mitigate fraud, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

    AI and Machine Learning Integration

Generative and learning technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning programs will likely become even more on trend than they already are in the coming months. These technologies have the power to detect threats before it’s too late and provide a method of response based on datasets that they have been able to analyze. It can do this in a matter of seconds, thus providing real-time security.

    Container Security

The security of containers is likely to also be a growing trend across cloud security in the coming months. Containers are essential to cloud-native applications, thus making them a big target for those who wish to exploit any vulnerabilities that might be found. The programs that offer container security are continually being developed alongside the latest technologies available, but it’s likely to remain a focus area across the industry.

    Serverless Security

Serverless functions are increasingly used by organizations to run many applications and services with the adoption of serverless computing in modern IT architectures. Nevertheless, as this type of trend changes, the security issues related to it transform as well. Security of serverless functions from threats and vulnerabilities is one of the key factors in maintaining the integrity and security of the overall system.

How can businesses prepare for the expected emerging trends of 2024?

While those outlined above are just the tip of the iceberg in regard to expected trends about the immediate future of cloud security, businesses need to ensure they are prepared to able to handle them when the time comes.

There are multiple ways in which they could do this, including embracing them and being prepared to invest when required. For instance, organizations that are yet to embrace ZTA should ought to do so as this can provide them with the greatest form of protection that is currently available. If they haven’t already, then it could cost them a lot of money, but it’s something that could prove valuable to them in the future.

Additionally, it’s worth investing in machine learning and generative artificial intelligence, as these technologies continue to show the ability that they can embrace and handle threats that are thrown against them.

However, while there are plenty of things that businesses can do to make sure they are ready for the future of cloud security, they also need to remember that they need to remain compliant. There are rules and regulations in certain locations that may impact the level or type of cloud security being used, and complying with evolving data protection regulations should also be of the utmost importance.
