When Online-Only Addiction Recovery Isn’t Always Enough

For many who need substance addiction treatment, including those with so-called “high-functioning addiction,” the convenience of online recovery programs that can be hidden and completed in secret might seem like a perfect option. From flexibility to privacy, balancing online addiction recovery with everyday life might seem like the perfect solution. Unfortunately, even those with full-time careers and families with addiction may still eventually suffer the consequences of untreated substance abuse. This is why experts refer to these people as “currently” high-functioning.

Most people find online recovery tools helpful when they begin using them. But, the more severe your addiction is, the higher the chances you’ll need an in-person solution for addiction recovery. Here’s why online-only addiction recovery isn’t always the best solution, how to know when it’s time to explore other in-person treatment options, and where to discover the best treatment.

What are the Risks of Relying Solely on Virtual Recovery?

Online therapy has paved the way for more people to get access to counseling and treatment services they otherwise wouldn’t have. But it’s not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution, especially for addiction treatment. Imagine meeting with your online therapist or addiction counselor once or twice a week, only to log off and turn back to the substances on your nightstand, or the friends you’re meeting later that night to use with. It’s this lack of structure and boundaries, coupled with an environment full of triggers, that can make it so hard to break free from addiction, with or without online therapy.

Yet other dangers of only participating in online therapy include:

    • Easy access to dangerous and even fatal drugs like opioids, fentanyl, and alcohol
    • Continuing to feel isolated or having little support
    • Limited ability for therapists to accurately assess you or work on treating any co-occurring mental health disorders
    • Lack of access to necessary treatment like detox programs, sober living facilities, and support groups

    Signs Online-Only Recovery Isn’t Working

How can you tell if a virtual approach is falling short?

    • Frequent Relapses: Occasional setbacks can be part of the recovery journey, but if relapses become a consistent pattern, it’s a strong signal that the current level of support is inadequate. The lack of immediate, in-person intervention during moments of crisis can make it almost impossible for people to stay on track.
    • Skipping Appointments or Disengaging: Regularly missing online sessions, showing up unprepared, or failing to engage during therapy are clear signs that your commitment to treatment and sobriety is failing too.
    • Isolation and Loneliness: Recovery can be a life-changing journey and much easier when you meet people along the way who can support your new sobriety. But how can you meet people through a virtual setting? If you continue to feel lonely or isolated in recovery, it’s time to explore in-person options to start building your support network.
    • Inability to Manage Triggers: If someone is unable to develop effective coping mechanisms for triggers in their home environment, it’s a sign that they need the safety and structure of an in-person facility to learn and practice these skills.

How to Find Comprehensive Support in Person

When online-only options are not enough, consider enrolling in a hybrid (partially online and in-person) or fully in-person program. At Present Moments Recovery, we provide a program that supports overall healing, including the mind, body, and spirit. Our San Diego-based addiction treatment center provides a safe, in-person environment where you can learn to engage with recovery without triggers and stressors impacting treatment.

We offer a continuum of care designed to meet people where they are. Our approach uses the power of in-person treatment through:

    • Emotional Support and Community: Healing happens in connection. Being surrounded by peers who understand the struggle and a compassionate staff that provides unwavering support creates a powerful sense of community. These relationships are the bedrock of a strong recovery foundation.
    • Body-Based Therapies: Addiction affects the entire nervous system. We incorporate body-based (somatic) therapies that help individuals reconnect with their bodies, process trauma, and regulate their emotions. These hands-on modalities are critical for releasing stored stress and finding a sense of inner calm.
    • A Safe, Structured Environment: Our facility offers a sanctuary from outside triggers and temptations. With structured daily schedules and 24/7 support, clients can build healthy new routines and coping skills in a controlled setting.

Present Moments Recovery provides a range of other essential recovery services, including:

    • Inpatient Treatment
    • Medical Detox
    • Outpatient Detox with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
    • Outpatient Treatment

    A Partner, Not a Competitor

Therapists and clients alike need to view in-person treatment not as a failure of online care, but as a valuable and sometimes necessary escalation of support. The goal is always the same: to provide the best possible outcome for the individual. For some, online therapy might be a great starting point or a step-down option after completing a more intensive program. For others, it may never be enough on its own.

If you or someone you know is struggling to make progress with online-only options, it may be time to consider a more immersive approach. Learn how the comprehensive, in-person programs at Present Moments Recovery can help build a solid foundation for a lifetime of sobriety.
