    Machine learning is now a core part of how many property and auto insurers operate. It helps companies assess risk, price policies, detect fraud, and settle claims faster. But while the technology promises efficiency, putting it into practice is far from simple. Behind the scenes, teams must deal with data problems, fairness concerns, system failures, and strict regulatory oversight.

    Jalees Ahmad works in this space, focusing on quality assurance and governance for machine learning systems used in insurance. His role highlights a key reality of the industry: building a model is only one part of the job. Making sure it works safely, fairly, and consistently in the real world is much harder.

    One of the most common problems in insurance AI is data quality. Property and auto insurers rely on large volumes of data, including claims history, inspection photos, repair costs, and driving behavior from telematics devices. If that data is incomplete or inconsistent, the model’s predictions will be flawed. Ahmad encountered this challenge when data inputs showed gaps and errors. By introducing automated validation checks and enforcing data standards, he helped reduce missing data from 9% to 1%. That improvement strengthened model performance and reduced the need for repeated retraining.

    Another issue is what happens after a model goes live. A system may perform well during testing but lose accuracy over time as customer behavior, weather patterns, or economic conditions change. This is known as model drift. To address this, Ahmad helped design monitoring dashboards that track model performance in real time. He also applied stress testing and out-of-time validation methods to simulate changing conditions. These efforts reduced unexpected model performance drops by 27% in production.

    Fairness is another major concern. Insurance pricing must follow strict non-discrimination laws. Even unintended bias in a model can lead to regulatory action. Ahmad implemented fairness testing methods to measure disparate impact across protected groups. In one pricing model, these measures reduced the disparity gap from 17% to 5%. He also worked on explainability testing, using tools that clarify why a certain premium increased or why a claim decision was made. This resulted in 98% of underwriting decisions having clear, defensible explanations.

    Machine learning is also widely used in claims processing. In property insurance, computer vision models assess roof damage from photos. In auto insurance, image models evaluate collision severity. Errors in these systems can be costly. Approving damage that does not exist raises expenses, while rejecting valid claims frustrates customers. The professional helped build high-quality reference datasets to improve how these models were trained and tested. The result was a 21% improvement in estimation accuracy and a reduction of $3.1 million annually in manual adjustment costs.

    Telematics adds another layer of complexity. Auto insurers process millions of real-time data points from vehicles on the road. These systems must handle large data volumes without delays. Ahmad contributed to performance testing to ensure these models remained stable under heavy load.

    His work also extended beyond technical testing. In regulated industries like insurance, machine learning teams must work closely with legal and compliance departments. He often acted as a bridge between engineers and legal teams, helping translate technical results into explanations that regulators and executives could understand.

    The impact of careful testing can also be seen in customer experience. After validating the reliability of AI-based “Express Claims” systems, the company increased touchless claim settlements by 37% while maintaining a 92% accuracy rate. Faster claims processing benefits customers, but only when accuracy and fairness are maintained.

    The experience of professionals like Jalees Ahmad shows that the biggest challenges in insurance machine learning are not just about algorithms. They are about data integrity, fairness, monitoring, and accountability. As insurers continue to adopt AI tools, strong governance and continuous testing will remain essential. In an industry built on trust, machine learning must be both efficient and responsible.
